As I drew up the sketches for Pak Parang, I wanted to convey a sense of the city changing hands regularly, gaining new styles each time.
On the top layer, we have plenty of Mandelbrot fractal motifs, tying in with Qulurists’ fascination with mysterious natural patterns.
As we delve deeper into the city, the architecture takes cues from Persia;
Mughal India (coming soon!);
…And many other styles, including my perennial favorite Soviet Futurism.
Even quick architecture reference sketches can make all the difference in establishing a world’s style! I’ve done lots of scattershot improvised buildings in this chapter, for sure, but anchoring it with some referenced styles can make it cohere.
